Dyphox has been proven to protect against 99.99% of viruses and bacteria, including Covid-19 in both laboratory tests and field studies.

The science behind Dyphox’s antimicrobial coating

Dyphox is a clear coating that can be applied to frequently-touched surfaces to kill 99% of the bacteria and viruses that settle there.

This antimicrobial technology works because of the principle of photodynamics. The non-toxic photocatalysts in Dyphox’s coating absorb nearby light (400–700 nm) and convert it into singlet oxygen. These reactive oxygen species quickly and efficiently kill bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores by oxidising their outer cell membrane. The singlet oxygen produced is large enough to kill all the germs present on the surface, but small enough to avoid being released into the air surrounding it, ensuring it is non-toxic for humans and the environment.

What’s more, Dyphox is a unique technology because all it requires to work is light. Natural sunlight and room lighting both work well, meaning there’s no need for UV treatment. It doesn’t need moisture to kill germs efficiently and therefore works on dry surfaces. Plus, we are proud to say there is no evidence of any formation of resistance to bacteria and viruses on Dyphox-treated surfaces.

The coating, which can be sprayed on or applied like clear paint, continues to disinfect for 12 months on indoor surfaces. We recommend annual reapplications to help permanently close the hygiene gap.

How Dyphox was created

The principle of photodynamics, on which Dyphox is founded, was discovered by German scientists Oskar Raab and Hermann von Tappeiner. Their revolutionary discovery came as early as the end of the 19th century when they found that photocatalysts could absorb light in the visible range and convert it effectively into oxygen radicals or singlet oxygen. The effect created could then be used to kill bacteria, viruses, fungi and spores.

Dyphox has leveraged this principle by modifying herbal and plant ingredients, producing a non-toxic solution that is safe for humans and the environment whilst still being incredibly effective.

This effectiveness has been proven in a range of studies, and Dyphox’s technology is supported by several certifications.

A field study in two hospitals with 1,300 samples over nine months proved that Dyphox provides a significant and lasting reduction in bacterial counts on surfaces near-patient surfaces, particular for high bacterial loads. This reduces the chances of transmission between staff and patients, creating healthier surfaces.

In the lab, Dyphox has been tested against a range of bacteria and viruses and proven its effectiveness against all forms of pathogens. Most importantly, Dyphox has been tested with a modified version of ISO 22196, allowing for both dry and wet conditions.

How Dyphox benefits businesses

Discover the benefits of Dyphox’s innovative and versatile antimicrobial coating technology.

High effectiveness

Unlike manual disinfection, which is only effective at the time of application, Dyphox provides a long-term solution for keeping surfaces healthy and safe.
Dyphox has been clinically proven in both laboratory and real-world environments to kill 99.99% of bacteria and viruses that contaminate treated surfaces.

Environmentally friendly

As Dyphox’s antimicrobial coating formulation is based on vitamins and phytochemicals, it is non-toxic. Its composition is free from metal particles, chemical disinfectants and plasticisers.
The range of singlet oxygen is only 8 mm, meaning it is too small to be released into the space surrounding the treated surface. That means Dyphox is safe for use around children of all ages and is kind to the environment.

Versatile use and application

Dyphox can be guaranteed to kill 99.99% of bacteria and viruses on almost any internal or external surface, including glass, stainless steel, aluminium and plastic.
The versatile coating can tolerate temperatures ranging from -20 to 80 degrees celsius and all humidities. Dyphox lasts 12 months indoors and 6 months outdoors and is resistant to everyday chemicals.

Use across industries

Dyphox is appropriate for use across any industry. In healthcare, the hygiene loop must be closed to protect the well-being of staff and patients.

However, any environment in which people come into contact with frequently-touched surfaces can benefit from antimicrobial treatment, from schools to public transport, restaurants to nursing homes.
